Daily Devotional: Psalms 12:1-4

Ps 12:1-4

Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

Rom 1:24-25

Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

In almost every generation there have been those who lamented that things had never been this bad before. We look around in our society and wonder if people have ever ignored God and his will more than they do today. In the days of Jesus, it was this bad. In the days of David, it was this bad. In the days of Noah, it was even worse! In every age there have been those who refused to serve God.

It is interesting that every generation in history thinks that they have risen above the intellect and abilities of all previous times. This has been referred to as “generational egotism”. Yet, as we look back, there have been those before who have accomplished feats that we cannot explain nor duplicate. People are people and we still face the same temptations, and we still have the same abilities. We may have more knowledge, but we are still just as self-centered and foolish.

We are to let our lights shine so that others will see our good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven. When we have the heart of Jesus, we will be filled with compassion, and we will let mercy triumph over judgment in our minds. We will look for ways to help others, especially those who are poor, those who are less fortunate in life, and those who are oppressed. Love the unlovable. Look for ways to use what God has entrusted to your care to help others.

O Lord God, give me a pure heart that is set on serving you and being just like Jesus in every part of my life. I know that I fail so I will need your help and your continued forgiveness. Help me keep a positive attitude, even in hard times so that I will not complain, grumble, or find fault with others. Remind me to rejoice in the Lord always and in so doing, to show the love of Jesus to others. Use me to accomplish what you want me to do today, tomorrow, and every day. Thank you for all the wonderful people you have put into my life. Give your peace to those who are hurting and who are facing trying times. Use me to encourage them to trust in you. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus, my very best friend.
