Daily Devotional: Psalms 14:1-7

Ps 14:1-7

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. You would shame the plans of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

1 Thess 5:15-19

See that no one repays anyone evil for evil but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.

I read a term recently that I had never heard of before called “cultural Christianity”. When I looked it up, I found that the concept was not new, it has just been given a new label. It is an ideology that embraces the moral and ethical values of Christianity without believing in many of the teachings of the Bible. Some say they are “cultural Christians” but deny the resurrection, or any of the miracles, with some even claiming to be atheists or agnostics.

In other words, they trust in themselves and their own wisdom, but not in God or in Jesus as the Son of God. This is the same mindset that the Sadducees held in the time of Jesus on earth. They were the progressive religious leaders of the day, but they denied the resurrection or life after death. As those of our day, they trusted in themselves, what they could see, or reason.

Christianity is following Christ. To follow Christ begins by believing that he is the Messiah who was promised throughout the Old Testament. This requires believing in God, in his eternal nature, in his infallible wisdom and in his infinite power and his word.

O Lord God, increase my faith. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus, not only as the greatest teacher of all times, but as my Savior and my Lord. Give me wisdom to understand what you have revealed to us in your word, but to also grasp all that you show me by your creation and your working in my life each day. Be with the leaders of our nation that they will lead in a way that allows us to live quiet and peaceful lives in all godliness. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
