Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:7-12
Ps 18:7-12
Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water. Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.
2 Thess 2:13-14
But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
There have been very few people who have been more faithful to God, and who have been more completely devoted to God than was David. But when you read his life story, you find a young man who was exalted and then knocked down. A man who was praised and then hated and hunted by the king of Israel. He was hated because people praised him more than Saul, but oddly, it tells us that Saul also feared David. Not because of David but because God was with him.
God promised David that he would be the next king, but instead of living in a palace or being a general in the army, he was the nation’s most wanted fugitive. Whenever the nation was not at war with other nations, the king used the entire army to hunt David. He issued numerous executive orders for the people to find David and report his location, some of which were carried out and some were ignored because the people loved David. Meanwhile, David lived in caves and stayed on the run. But during all of this, God was with David and protected him.
Although you and I will probably (hopefully) never be on the nations most wanted list, we do face our problems in life, some more serious than others. Whatever we face, the same God who anointed David and protected him has anointed us and will protect us until the day we are made to reign with Jesus in eternity.
O Lord God, mighty and full of majesty, it is with a humble heart that I come in your presence to praise you and thank you for all of your goodness. In your grace you have blessed me far beyond anything that I deserve. You have protected me when I have faced danger and harm, and I thank you. When I have been down and discouraged, you have given me hope and reason to go on. There are so many who are facing so much in their lives, and I ask you to please be with them, strengthen their faith and give them peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
